The evergreen state, Washington is filled with trees and has loads to offers its tourists. The first settlement in Washington was at Tumwater in 1845. In 1853, Washington separated from the Oregon territory and was admitted to the Union in 1889. Seattle flourished as an important port en route to Alaska and Yukon goldfields. Washington is bounded on the North by the Canadian province of British Columbia; on the E by Idaho; on the South by Oregon; and on the West by the Pacific Ocean.
Islands of the San Juan group, lying between the Haro and Rosario straits, include Orcas, San Juan, and Lopez. Whidbey is a large island in the upper Puget Sound.
